According to a legend the blood & semen of castrated Uranus impregnated the waves, causing Aphrodite (Venus in Roman mythology) to step forth from the ocean onto the Isle of Cyprus. She was greeted by naiads who draped her naked body in myrtle, but in ancient portraits of Aphrodite, rosemary as well as myrtle is worked into the imagery. Until today Rosemary is regarded as an aphrodisiac. And a French legend for example says that if a man didn't like the scent of rosemary, he would be an
inferior lover.

Rosemary was an embalming herb and sacred in Egypt. It was also a sacred herb to the Greeks. In Ancient Greece and in Ancient Rome rosemary was associated with remembrance. Students would wear the rosemary herb to help them concentrate during exams. Christian folklore says that rosemary will grow for 33 years, until it reaches the height Christ was when he died, and then it will grow no more. The Virgin Mary is said to have spread her blue cloak over a white-blossomed rosemary bush when she was resting, and the flowers turned blue. In the 19th Century it was a popular Christmas decoration.

[wpspoiler name=”Where to find it”]Ireland: N/A

Greece: Prefers dry and fallow lands and can be found everywhere in Greece.

Germany: Rosemary is cultivated in gardens and also indoor.
